Quick note before we start: this issue was supposed to hit your inbox on Wednesday. I got home from Saint Lucia and needed an extra day (okay, two) to actually process what I learned before I wrote about it. Turns out, that's kind of the point of this whole issue. Thanks for your patience.

Now — let me tell you where I've been.

A few weeks ago, I got on a plane with ten women and flew to Saint Lucia for six days. Sisters, friends, chosen family. No agenda beyond being together. No spreadsheets. No client calls. No 12:30 to 4:30 shift with my son. Just water, mountains, food I didn't cook, and conversation.

I want to tell you what it taught me. Not because I think you need to book a trip (though you might), but because a lot of us treat rest, connection, and time away from the work as soft topics. Nice-to-haves. Indulgences we'll get to when things "calm down."

They aren't. They're financial decisions with real returns. And I want to make the case, in language your accidental-CFO brain will understand.

Three lessons.

1. Rest isn't a cost. It's a return.

Here's what most working people believe, whether they say it out loud or not: time off is expensive. You lose income (if you're self-employed). You come back to a mountain of work. You feel guilty for the money you spent. You worry about what fell through the cracks.

So we don't rest. Or we rest badly. You know a weekend where we're still checking email, a vacation where we're still answering "just one quick question."

Here's the reframe: the return on a real break isn't the rest itself. It's what surfaces when you stop.

On day three of my trip, I realized how much of myself I'd let go of over the past few years. Parts of me — literal, specific parts, from the way I dress to the way I sing — had been quietly sitting in the corner while I worked. I hadn't noticed because I was moving too fast. It took six days of not moving to see it.

That surfacing is the ROI. You can't calculate it in advance because you don't know what you're going to find. But you can trust that the return is real, because it's the same math as any other investment: you put something in (time, money, energy) and you get something back (clarity, perspective, direction).

2. Friendship is infrastructure.

I want to tell you about the ten women I traveled with.

One organized every logistic and knew when to defer to the group and when to make the executive call. One brought adventure and family. One brought resilience and grace under pressure. One brought fitness and gentle accountability. One knew her limits and named them without apology. One brought bubbly curiosity and made ordinary moments feel like gifts. One brought creativity and music. One brought unexpected humor and depth. One had a youthful glow and let herself be loved on. One told us it's never too late to book the flight.

I didn't just spend six days with friends. I spent six days being shown a dozen different ways to be a woman in the world. I learned more about myself in that room than I would have in six months of therapy.

Here's the point for you: the people you're around determine what you know is possible.

This is true in finance too. The reason accidental CFOs feel stuck is often because they don't know anyone else doing what they're doing. They don't have a peer group that normalizes the questions they're asking. They don't have someone to text "is this normal?" when a funder pulls a grant or a client renegotiates.

That's not a soft problem. That's an infrastructure problem.

What this means for you: Who you spend time with is a financial decision. Not because those people give you money (though sometimes they do). But because they give you access to possibilities of how to run a business, how to raise a kid, how to leave a job, how to build a life. If your current circle is stuck, your imagination is stuck too.

3. The hardest part isn't the trip. It's the return.

I've been back on U.S. soil for a few weeks now. And I have to be honest: it's been rough.

The humidity in Houston hit me the moment I landed. There's no chef here. No mountains outside my window. No sulfur springs. No fresh coconut delivered by a guy named Jimmy who rowed up to our boat with a machete and the calmest hustle I've ever seen.

The trip was easy. Being in the trip was easy. Coming home and figuring out how to bring even 10% of that peace, presence, and self-knowledge into everyday life — that is hard.

Most people I know fail this part. They come back from a break and within 48 hours, they're right back to the pace and habits they left. The trip becomes a photo album, not a change.

Here's the thing: reacclimation is a design problem, not a discipline problem.

You will not "will yourself" into keeping the peace of vacation. You have to build systems for it. What one thing from the trip do you want to bring home? What time on the calendar will you protect for it? What automatic rule can you set so it doesn't require willpower every day?

For me, the list is small but specific: shop the farmer's market for real fruit. Get dressed up once a week and take a photo. Sing more. Not big life changes — just tiny, protected commitments that keep something of the trip alive in the everyday.

What this means for you: The next time you come back from any break — a vacation, a retreat, a weekend away, even a long walk — don't just re-enter your life. Design your re-entry. Pick one thing. Protect it. Automate it if you can. The trip only pays a return if you spend a fraction of it back in your daily life.

One more thing:

There was a moment on the last night of the trip. Karaoke. I hadn't sung in front of people in years. And when I grabbed the mic and closed my eyes, something in me let go.

I have a deep voice I forgot I had. Not because I lost it. Because I stopped using it. And I stopped using it because at some point, being a working mom and a founder and a wife and a full-time employee started taking up so much of me that "the parts of me that sing" got quietly filed under later.

The trip reminded me that "later" is where dreams go to die. If something is important to you and you never make room for it, it's not important to you anymore. It's just something you used to want.

This isn't a finance lesson. Except that it is. Because every dollar you earn is a means to a life, and if the life you're funding doesn't include the things that make you you, then the numbers aren't working.

Rest. Sisterhood. Coming home differently. Singing.
