Hi friend, Last month, I sat on a Bill.com panel for the first time as a finance leader talking about AI. If you don't know Bill.com, it's the platform a huge chunk of small businesses and nonprofits use to manage their bills and payments. I've spoken on their panels before, but this one was different. Charles Tsang from BILL and Lilah Raynor, CEO of Logica Research, were unpacking their brand-new 2026 State of AI in Finance report, a survey of 500 finance leaders across the country. My job wasn't to be the AI expert. (I'm not.) My job was to be the person in the room actually using this stuff in the real world, the finance leader who's tried the tools, navigated the awkward conversations with IT, and figured out what works versus what's just noise. In other words: I was there as one of you. I had about an hour to share what I've learned. And I want to bring it to you here, because if you've been quietly anxious about AI (or quietly excited and pretending to be anxious so you don't look behind the curve), this one's for you. First, the headline: AI is not coming for your job. But it is changing it. And the change is mostly good, if you understand what's hype and what's real. Here are the three things I want you to walk away knowing. 1. The real impact of AI isn't where you think.When most people picture "AI in finance," they imagine algorithms making investment decisions or robots replacing accountants. That's not what's actually happening. The real impact is in the daily grind. Summarizing long reports. Drafting first versions of memos. Pulling insights out of large datasets faster than a human could. Speeding up research that used to take days. In other words: AI isn't making the decisions. It's helping you get to a first draft faster, so you can spend more time on the part only you can do, the thinking, the judgment, the conversations. What this means for you: If you've been waiting for AI to do something dramatic before you try it, you're missing the point. The most valuable AI tools are the ones quietly saving you 30 minutes here and an hour there, adding up to entire afternoons you get back every week. 2. The skill that matters more now isn't technical.I'll say this plainly: you do not need to learn how to code. You do not need to become a "prompt engineer." You do not need an AI certification. What you do need is sharper critical thinking. The most valuable people in finance right now, at every level, are the ones who can look at an AI-generated output and ask, "Wait, is this actually right?" The ones who can spot when an AI has confidently invented a number. The ones who know when to override the model and trust their experience. If you've ever caught a mistake in a board packet that everyone else missed, that's the skill. If you've ever questioned a vendor's "sure thing" because something felt off, that's the skill. AI doesn't replace that instinct. It makes it more valuable. What this means for you: Your accidental-CFO instincts, the ones that make you double-check the math, ask the uncomfortable question, refuse to sign off until you understand it, are exactly what this moment needs. Stop apologizing for being slow. You're being thorough. That's worth more now than ever. 3. If something sounds too frictionless, it's a red flag.This was the line that got the most nods in the room. When you hear an AI pitch that promises "no human review needed," "works across all your data instantly," or "no need to change your workflows," pump the brakes. In finance, when something promises to remove all friction, it's usually removing necessary controls along with it. Real AI implementation requires you to think carefully about: What data should this tool touch? Who reviews the output? What happens when it's wrong? Where does accountability sit when something goes sideways? Those questions aren't obstacles. They're the work. Any tool, or any vendor, that tells you those questions don't matter is selling you something you shouldn't buy. What this means for you: Before you adopt any AI tool for your nonprofit, business, or even your personal finances, run it through three simple filters: Speed. Does this actually make me faster? Trust. Does this maintain or improve my confidence in the output? Ownership. Is it still clear who is accountable when something goes wrong?
If a tool passes all three, it's probably worth piloting. If it fails any of them, walk away. One more thing: The most important line from the entire panel wasn't a stat from the report. It was something I said almost off the cuff, and afterward several people came up to tell me it was the takeaway they were going to bring back to their team: AI should reduce effort. But it shouldn't reduce accountability.
That's the whole game. Use AI to do the parts that drain you. Keep the human judgment for the parts that matter. Don't let any tool, no matter how impressive, talk you out of being the one responsible for your numbers. You're still the CFO. AI is just a really fast assistant who occasionally makes things up.
